One of the reasons that Capoeira is such a unique art is because of the relationship of trust and betrayal between players. You’ll see experienced players often probing one another to be set up for an attack, as when a player holds a parada de mão (handstand) daring the other player to try and kick them over. Each time a Capoeirista does a parada de mão or aú (cartwheel), they are putting themselves in a vulnerable position—or so it may seem. The jogo (game) of Capoeira is as much of a mind game as it is a physical test; usually the person who reacts the fastest wins. There are multiple ways that a player can attack from his/her hands, and being able to do so is a demonstration of experience and skill. Any player can kick their opponent standing up, but can a player get the best of someone while upside-down? That said, it is important to recognize an opponent’s rank and ability and show them respect accordingly. If you manage to kick a player while on their hands, remember that by doing so, you’ve given that player the right and reason to deliver a consequence. |
